Biology Major in College - Discovering the Many Pursuits of a Biology Major

Biology Major in College - Discovering the Many Pursuits of a Biology MajorIf you want to be a biologist, you should pursue a biology major in college. This kind of degree is more likely to bring you with a career as a laboratory scientist, biomedical engineer, or even a school psychologist. It is an exciting and challenging field, and anyone who wants to take on this kind of work should consider a biology major in college.First, the courses in college coursework are much different than those that you will have in high school. There are more subjects to learn, and biology majors will need to get very comfortable with that fact. Remember that there is a huge difference between a high school science class and a college-level biology class. You will also need to be aware of your basic biology, and some biology majors have had difficulty because they didn't know where to start with basic biology. Don't let yourself become intimidated by it. Just go ahead and do your best, and don't let yo urself get overwhelmed.Biology majors should also have a desire to learn how nature works. In college, you will need to try to make more of an effort to study nature, and the more you learn about your environment, the better you will be able to understand what goes on in it. And you will need to know everything about biology to get the job you want.Biology majors can expect to receive much more training than most students get in college. There will be more hands-on opportunities for students, especially if they plan to go into more rigorous environments, such as a graduate program or some research lab. This means that you will need to be willing to put in the work that will help you make the most of your studies. If you went to high school biology, this may not be such a big deal to you, but if you have never taken any biology courses or don't even know what those classes are, it might be a bit daunting. This is the reason why a biology major in college is often recommended by profes sionals who know biology, including biology professors, counselors, and other professors in other courses. It is a good opportunity for students who want to get into a rewarding and challenging field of study. This is why biology majors are so highly regarded in the field.

10 Beautiful Middle East Cities In The Arab World

10 Beautiful Middle East Cities In The Arab World Gorgeous Cities In The Middle East ChaptersTen Amazing Arabian CitiesI remember the first time that I saw the pyramids, I was in a taxi driving through the city of Giza. The city was welcoming, with wide dusty roads, and people walking in all directions going about their day. I hung my head out of the window like a happy puppy taking in the Arab culture, the new sights, sounds and smells of the Arab world. The problem was that I was looking out of the wrong side of the taxi.It was the driver who took the initiative to point to the other side of the street, to tell me that the pyramids were there. I looked out of the other window of the taxi and simultaneously burst into tears. They were tears of shock and awe because there they were supreme, gigantic and slap bang in the middle of the city.I had always assumed that the pyramids were in the middle of the desert, you rarely see pictures of the Arabian city of Giza sprawled out next to the pyramids. But the reality is that you could potentially rent an apartment in Giza and have your neighbouring view from your bedroom window be the pyramids. The Burj Al Arab is a luxury hotel located in Dubai. How to Set a Price for my Portuguese Lessons

How to Set a Price for my Portuguese Lessons What Fees Should You Charge for Giving Portuguese Lessons? ChaptersWhat Type of Courses Will You Teach?Location is Key in Setting Prices for Portuguese LessonsWhere do Portuguese Courses Fall? What it All Boils Down ToSpeaking more than one language is a valuable asset in more ways than one.Being bi- or multilingual boosts your cognitive ability, enables to you multitask better â€" or, conversely, enables better focus on the task at hand, and it provides a whole range of other mental and psychological benefits. But that’s not what this article is all about. Today, your Superprof wants to help you make the most of your most marketable skill â€" your ability to speak Portuguese by giving some tips on how to set a schedule of fees for the lessons you are so eager to give.Eager to give lessons, indeed! But not eager to give them away...Now we look at some factors that will influence how to set your prices just right so that your students feel they get the best value for their money.CAPLE or CELPE-Bras?Will you teach adults? Will you teach Convers ational Portuguese, for prospective holidaymakers? Will you teach Portuguese for Business? As you can see from the sheer variety of courses you may offer, either as a native speaker of Portuguese or one who has mastered Portuguese through language studies, there must be a difference in pricing, from course to course. You should not charge the same price for Business Portuguese lessons as you would charge a student preparing for a language exam.Furthermore, the duration of lessons would be different: a four-year-old would not have the same attention span as an adult, and adults learning Portuguese conversation may not wholly benefit from a full hour of language instruction like a student preparing for an exam would. One more consideration: how many students will you teach at one time? Some language teachers offer discounted rates to small groups â€" no more than 8 learners, while others offer discounts on their overall price for learners who pay for a block of language classes upfront.Let ’s paint the scenario of giving Business Portuguese classes. You have approached several international companies with the idea of providing language lessons to their staff, onsite. The HR or training manager really likes your idea and awards you a 10-week contract to teach select employees all about Brazil’s language and culture. They will provide a room for you to conduct your lessons in, equipped with all of the necessary accoutrements: overhead projector, computer, dry-erase board...All you need to bring are textbooks, worksheets, other resources and learning materials such as Powerpoint presentations and maybe some flashcards and other media.Naturally, you would not charge each company employee for those Portuguese lessons; instead, you would negotiate a fee with the training manager â€" hopefully, a reasonable one; overcharging would result in no deal. Now, for a different example...Let us suppose that your prospective clients’ son is marrying a lovely person from Portugal an d the wedding is to be held in Covilhã â€" not exactly a big town; not one where many English speakers would be found.Naturally, there must be conversation between the families and, most likely, there would be a bit of tourism involved. In this instance, you may recommend that your soon-to-be students purchase a textbook and Portuguese dictionary themselves and you would develop a curriculum based on their needs.Perhaps, so that they might communicate with their future in-laws, you would help them develop speaking and listening skills â€" teaching them words and phrases suitable to the occasion, and mostly foregoing reading and writing. How would you prepare for these Portuguese lessons? How much would you charge this family per hour of Portuguese instruction? That depends on one, very important factor. How much you may charge for Portuguese lessons depends on where you are located Source: Pixabay credit: Andras BartaLocation is Key in Setting Prices for Portuguese LessonsThere are th ree things that matter in property: location, location, location (incorrectly attributed to) Lord Harold Samuel. Not only is that phrase often incorrectly attributed to our most famous real estate magnate, but it is also inaccurate that location only applies to property.Where you give your lessons is an important determining factor in setting your prices for teaching Portuguese vocabulary and pronunciation. For one, if you live in or around London, you may find that pricing yourself competitively means charging far more per hour of instruction than, say, someone who teaches Portuguese in Birmingham or Leeds.Conversely, those who bring Brazilian culture to small towns such as Warminster or Swanley may find themselves overwhelmed with requests for lessons â€" and may charge slightly higher fees, simply because there is little to no competition   from other teachers in those regions. However, if you offer Portuguese lessons online, you may find yourself setting prices for each hour of in struction far lower than if you taught in person, no matter where in the country you are.Find out what qualifications you need to teach Portuguese online or in a classroom...There is vigorous and healthy competition among tutors for students learning Portuguese online! So, how can you give your students the best learning experience while still earning enough to make a decent living?1. Find out what local pricing for foreign language lessons is and set your prices accordingly.2. Offer extras: maybe you could hold free workshops or seminars at your local community centre or library in order to attract prospective students.3. Study the market and adapt: if indeed you do live in a small town where there is very little second language instruction going on, you can promote your skills as a teacher to bring about more opportunity â€" for yourself and for students. You may also teach Portuguese online. Where do Portuguese Courses Fall?In the spectrum of language learning, Portuguese is admitt edly far from the Number 1 choice for most anyone who wants to learn a new language. Most students desiring to learn a language generally prefer to learn German, learn Italian or learn French, with others preferring to speak Spanish or Arabic. There is even a substantial slice of the population who see more value in learning Mandarin Chinese than the Portuguese language!Fair warning: you may have an uphill battle convincing any learner to choose this Romance language over any others.A strong argument for the need to learn Portuguese comes from the British Council, who warn that the dire shortage of language instruction that besets our nation could cost us â€" both economically and culturally. You may use their plea in your marketing strategy! In proposing that people learn to speak Portuguese, either in a formal class or in a language course you establish and teach, you become an instrument for driving the benefits of foreign language skills in your community and for our country’s gr eater good. How much you earn from giving Portuguese lessons depends on many factors Source: Pixabay Credit: SatchappsWhat it All Boils Down ToHow much should you charge for teaching people how to speak Portuguese? That depends on where you will teach Portuguese speaking â€" the town/city as well as whether you teach in a classroom environment or in your home.Or in language learners’ home or through online lessons. It also depends on the level of language training you offer.Beginners would probably pay less than intermediate-level students who, in turn, might find the financial burden of learning a new language less than someone who conjugates irregular verbs in Portuguese just for the fun of it.Some language training companies in London charge as much as £45 per hour of face to face instruction, but they offer a discount if blocks of lessons are paid for in advance â€" say, 10 lessons for £400.One language school charges an extra £15 should someone wish to sit in on their friendâ €™s language study session. Those same companies charge less per hour (only £35) for the same lessons given via webcam simply because there is virtually no overhead incurred by online lessons â€" no classroom to pay for and no travel time or transportation costs to meet their students for lessons. And, our research shows that Portuguese for Business language classes cost significantly more than learning Portuguese conversation skills ( £75 per hour versus £35!)Superprof has 142 registered Portuguese tutors. Every one of them offers lessons online and most of them offer their first hour of lessons free! The average price of a Portuguese lesson on Superprof is £14 per hour, irrespective of whether the help needed is for test prep or Portuguese pronunciation. Now that you have a range of prices and factors to consider in setting your fees for language study, we leave you with a final tip:Don’t price yourself out of the market! It might be tempting to set your prices low in order to att ract more students â€" or high in order to generate enough revenue to subsist on, but beware: going to either extreme may send clients away!Mid-range is the best pricing; the rest of your earning potential will be met by your teaching methods and enthusiasm! Now follow this step by step guide to giving Portuguese lessons...

You Might Be an Introvert.... - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / You Might Be an Introvert.... - Introvert Whisperer You Might Be an Introvert. I’m going to combine Jeff Foxworthy’s “you know you might be a redneck if” with a conversation I had this morning about traits of introverts. You might be an introvert if In some group settings, you are the one listening quietly. You hate “small talk”. You prefer intimate one on one interactions with people rather than being in a group. (Think coffee versus party) You’re happy when someone cancels. You can get up and talk to instruct or share information you know well but dread being in a social event where you don’t know most of the people. The idea of a forced group discussion sounds bad to you. You’re occasionally invisible. You are perfectly happy doing things by yourself. You think “working a room” is worse than a root canal. You’re exhausted after attending a meeting where you pretty much didn’t say anything or do anything other than sit. Sometimes you don’t turn on the TV, radio or music because the silence is so delicious. Sometimes you need to be alone. You are chatty with some people like family, friends or people you know well but not in groups that include people you don’t know. (And this makes you think you aren’t an introvert) Sometimes being social is simply being in the same room as another person. If any of these sounds like you, you might be an introvert. Go to top Let me emphasize that Self-Promotion doesn’t have to be obnoxious to be effective.  But, if you don’t Self-Promote you, who will? Avoiding and Preparing For the Potential Lay Off - Introvert Whisperer

Introvert Whisperer / Avoiding and Preparing For the Potential Lay Off - Introvert Whisperer Avoiding and Preparing For the Potential Lay Off The idea of getting laid off is a bit more terrorizing thought than in days gone by.  Right now, job loss means facing the possibility that there are fewer jobs out there to get and employers being unclear if hiring is the right business decision.  Losing a job these days is a scary thought.  Laying people off is a constant in businesses and all too frequent in this past decade.  A new saying has been coined: “All jobs are temporary”.  It does seem to be the case, but there are things you can and should do to prepare. Don’t be in Denial The first thing you need to do is to make sure you aren’t being in denial about your personal standing at work and the business you are working for.  In my 21+ years managing in big business, I can’t tell you how many times I spoke to people who said “I didn’t see it coming” when informed of being laid off.  Some of those people worked for me.  Prior to the moment of informing them that they no longer had a job, I spent countless hours communicating about what was to come, informing them of layoff criteria.  Yet, they sat there totally astonished and ticked off.  It never failed to stun me, just how many people simply wouldn’t pay attention.  Other managers had the same thing to report.  Denial about the reality of your situation, especially right now, will only make your situation worse.  Your denial will cause you to lack preparedness emotionally, financially and professionally. Certainly, there are businesses that aren’t as proactive or sensitive to their employees.  In fact, I admit there are businesses that operate by the seat of the pants so much that they don’t even know they’re in trouble until they notice the heat from their hair on fire.  But despite that, there are often warning signs. Be Aware of Warning Signs Warning signs in large businesses usually have some kind of public communication.  If your company is publicly traded, they have to inform their shareholders of business downturns and profit issues.  You can count on the communication to sound positive and upbeat.  Often times, this upbeat sound kind of “dulls” the impact of the issues.  To be fair, if a company is having problems, they do want to ensure they understand the issues and are taking action.  Your best tactic is to listen to both the bad and good news, ensuring you aren’t missing the bad news messages because of the positive.  Try to personalize the bad newsâ€"how is this going to impact you or the area in which you work?  If you can’t translate it down to your level, ask your management what it might mean.  Do your homework.  Ask people inside the company and outside until you have multiple points of view.  THEN, decide if this is your early warning sign. Warning signs in small businesses are harder to detect.  If your company is small but well run, it may be easier.  Obviously, if they are good at communicating, listen to it carefully.  If they aren’t, look for things like, not rehiring when someone leaves, depleting inventory, if you and other workers aren’t busy, and even things like not meeting payroll on time.  Any activity that requires money to make it happen will usually be the first thing that gets stopped or cut back.  Even though warning signs in small companies are harder to detect, with a bit of observation, they can be seen. Obviously, there are always those businesses that have and give no warning signs.  If you have been the recipient of a layoff in this situation, you have my deepest sympathy.  I have known people to get raises and promotions one week and laid off the next.  I’m not saying that all situations generate warning signs.  I am saying, most of them do have warning signs, and I’m pointing out that too many people prefer to ignore or deny the reality of their situation. Prepare.  My second piece of advice is to prepare as if you will lose your job.  Get your personal financial situation in order.  Eliminate debt and create an emergency fund.  If you lose your job, the thing that will cause the biggest stress will be a mountain of debt that you have no means to repay.  With that debt gone and having an emergency fund, if you lose your job, you can proceed with greater confidence that you and your family will be okay for a while.  As you know, your personal confidence plays a huge role in getting a job in the first place.  If you are panic stricken, you dull your intelligence and problem-solving abilities, both things critical to job search. Get yourself ready for a job search  Update your resume’.  Ensure you have letters of reference, job reviews, any documents that support your performance that you might need.    Do your homework.  Identify where you would start your job search.  Make sure your network is warmed up and you’ve renewed old relationships. If appropriate, start sending out “feelers” to see what situation other companies are in for hiring.  If you are really sure the pink slip is coming, go ahead and start the process.  It’s much easier to find a job when you have a job, and right now there is a growing bias against hiring people who are unemployed.  Get ahead of the power curve. Do you know what your next career step is?   Many people don’t. Biology plays a role when it comes to your voice type or tessitura. In addition to your vocal range, you should be aware of what type of vocal character you have. (Source: StockSnap)Female VoicesThere are four main types of female voice:Sopranos. The most common type of female voices is also the type covering the highest range of notes.Mezzo-sopranos. Many children also fall into this voice range. This is the higher end of the mid-range voices.Altos. This is a deeper female voice.Contraltos. This is quite rare and the deepest female voices.Male VoicesThere are four main types of male voices, too:Countertenor. The highest male voice.Tenor. This is a high-pitched chest voice.Baritone. This voice type is common among men.Bass. This is the deepest of all voice types. You Can’t Choose Your Voice TypeYou can’t choose your voice type. You’re born with it and it’ll change over time. It’s your instrument and reflects your character, desires, and ambition. You can't change what type of voice you have; you just have to work with it and get the most out of it. (Source: you111811)A singer’s voice is affected by several criteria including your breathing, your voice box, etc. For example, a deep voice is often due to larger and thicker vocal cords.  The power of your lungs and the capacity of your nasopharynx will also affect the type of voice you’ll have.Rather than trying to change your voice, you should try and own it, work on it, and fine-tune it. Of all the ways to do this, these are some of the best:Adopt a good posture so that you can breathe more easily.Breathe with your diaphragm. This takes some work so make sure your stomach pushes out when you breathe in and tenses as you breathe out.Articulate each consonant and vowel. In addition to determining your voice type, you also need to own it so that you can master it. Of course, every voice is different and they won’t fit perfectly into the classifications. There are a lot of di fferent types.Learn to Adapt to Your Tessitura“Singing is a way of escaping. It's another world. I'm no longer on earth.” - Edith PiafYou may be tempted to define your own voice but there are tools out there to help you work out your tessitura. Tessitura is the range of notes that a singer can sing comfortably. Whether you sing solo or in a group, you need to work within your vocal range. (Source: Skitterphoto)In short, if you can comfortably sing a song from start to finish, it’ll mean that the song is for your tessitura. If this isn’t the case, you’ll need to adapt or find a new song. The world of music is unwavering.  Your voice is the fertile earth from which a musical flower can bloom. As you’ve seen the different types (alto, bass, countertenor, etc.), you need to know exactly what yours is.There are tools you can use to work out what your vocal range is. If you’ve got a computer and a microphone, you’re all set.  Once you know your range, you’ll know what your voice type is. If you still can’t work it out, you might want to get in touch with a singing teacher. You can do this through a test session.Working out your vocal range is easy, isn’t it?Just get in touch with a tutor from Superprof. In the space of an hour, you’ll know what your voice type is and the type of songs you should be singing. Go for it!  Improvising is good, but knowing what you’re working with will save you a lot of time. While there are a few main categories of voice, there are as many different voices as there are singers. (Source: RonPorter)It’s essential that you work on it. It’s a good idea to record yourself to learn what your voice is capable of. Additionally, you’ll be able to work out your vocal strengths and weaknesses.Listen several times and work on the parts you’re struggling with. This will also help you choose what songs to sing. How?Find singers who have the same tessitura as you.If you’re a contralto, for example, here are some singers with the same voice type:Nina SimoneAlicia KeysAmy WinehouseIf you’re a tenor, you can choose from the following:Freddie MercuryJust TimberlakePaul McCartneySinging these stars’ songs are a good way to practise and enjoy using your voice.  You can also listen to songs you like and see what your voice type is.You might love Mariah Carey and find singing her songs quite easy. Maybe you love Elvis Presley and never struggle singing along to The King.In the first case, you’re probably a soprano and in the second case, you’re probably a baritone. This is a simple and effective way to work out your voice type.Working out your voice type is quite easy, mastering it is a different kettle of fish, especially if you’re joining a choir or auditioning for a musical. Your tessitura is yours and yours alone so make the most of it.Everyone's vocal folds are different and while vocal ranges can be broadened through vocal exercises, a voice teacher can only do so much. Your vocal training and voice lessons will focus on getting the most out of your voice type, be it a mezzo-soprano, bass-baritone, or tenor voice. You can also learn more about registers from a singing coach or tutor. They can even show you artists with the same tessitura as you. Again, a tutor can help you work out the best repertoire.  If you'd like to learn more about singing, consider getting help from one of the talented tutors on Superprof. There are three mai n types of singing tutorial and voice coaching and each type has several advantages and disadvantages so what's right for one student may not be right for another. In face-to-face tutorials, there's just you and the tutor. This means that the tutor can focus on helping you to improve your voice and will put together a bespoke programme for you to follow. These are usually the most costly type of private tutorials since you're paying for all the tutor's time both in and out of class but they're also the most cost-effective.There are also online tutorials where the student is taught via webcam. With the tutor not having to travel to their lessons and being able to schedule more lessons per week, these tend to cost less per hour than face-to-face tutorials. Since the tutor isn't in the room there with you, these tutorials are better for academic subjects rather than vocational ones. If you both have a good microphone and a good internet connection, online tutorials are a great option fo r those wanting to learn to sing on a budget. Finally, there are also tutors offering group tutorials. If you and a group of friends are interested in learning how to sing, you could hire a tutor together and divide the cost of the tutor's time. Of course, you won't get as much individual attention from your singing coach as you would in the other types of tutorials but you will pay less per hour per student. No matter which type of singing coach you go for, they'll be able to help you work out your voice type, plan lessons that can help you improve your voice, and suggest songs and activities that work best with your tessitura.

Languages Resources Day

Languages Resources Day On Wednesday May 24th we held a Languages Resource Day for our tutors. We some amazing tutors of French, Spanish, German, Chinese and English as a Foreign Language. Here we have summarised their knowledge and you’ll find links to their resources. Planning your first lesson The first lesson is all about building rapport and making the student feel confident.  Once they show they have knowledge of the language they’ll be more receptive to learning.  Katja explained that when you’re in a one-on-one tutoring lesson introducing role playing characters can be a great way to build a story and help the student to relax. It also brings more people into the conversation so that you can talk about “we” instead of “you” and “me”!  The first lesson is also a great opportunity to get to know the student’s interest so you can use them later.  Lucinda suggested audio visual resources such as watching TED talks so that the tutees can see difficult vocabulary in action.  For younger students Sonia recommended Peppa Pig as the episodes are also available in French and German Find out their aims Students have a variety of reasons for wanting to learn a language so it’s important to understand what they are hoping to get out of the lessons.  Sonia showed us the work books she uses which are specific to each exam board. By using these the students can practice exam techniques and ensure they are prepared. For student’s learning a language for the first time, whether children or adults, Katja said that introducing the culture of the country can enthuse students. Teaching vocabulary through discussions of food, films and products from the language’s culture (or cultures) can be an effective way to inspire enthusiasm for the language, therein aiding the students’ learning memory Get Creative Katja teaches German to students of all ages and finds that games are a fun and creative way for students to learn.  She feels it’s important to get the students up and moving during the lessons as this can help them to remember the rules.  Resources like this can be expensive but can also be easily made at home.  For example she had created a dice and flash cards for story building which were laminated.  Top tip: Laminators can be bought for less than £20 - laminate your resources so that you don’t have to make them again!  You can also adapt classic board games such as Jenga and Snakes and Ladders. Be visual Lucinda expressed the importance of visual aids - especially for younger learners!  She always makes sure that her resources are colourful.  Katie agreed and showed us an amazing grid she uses to build sentences - this can be particularly useful if the student’s native language uses a different sentence structure.  Emma teaches Chinese and finds visual aids extremely important as Chinese characters can be quite tricky to teach.  Her top tips for teaching tones in language is by using a toy car to map the journey of the tones used.  As a the car travels up the hill the tone goes up! Mariota, who has learned Chinese before, agreed that this would be a really fun way to introduce tones without feeling embarrassed. Speak the language It may seems obvious but all of the tutors agreed that the lessons should take place solely in the language you’re trying to teach.  This helps the client to become immersed in the language and get used to inferring the meaning without being explicitly told.  It also ensures that the students get used to failure and really helps with listening exercises.  It can be tough to train the students to do this but they’ll thank you for it later! Go online Online is becoming increasingly popular on Tutorfair and can be a great way to find students outside of your local area and cut down on travel costs.  Luka has written an a  great  blog on teaching online in general but today we discussed teaching languages online.  Lucinda explained that it’s really easy and effective to teach online as you can send over your powerpoint presentations and worksheets beforehand and go through them together.  You can also type sentences via instant message and ask the student to translate.  Katja recommended chatting via video chat on your phone but using your computer to share Google Docs which can be edited together in real time.  The student then has notes to take away from the lesson! That said, Sonia warned that you have to trust the tutee not to cheat when you’re not in the room with them. Do you have any really useful exercises or top tips for language teaching? If so, we would love it if you upload them to our Resource Centre to share with other tutors!
